The US is home to the largest number of SM advertisements in the world, with over $200bn of revenue annually, according to a new report.
But it is hardly a new industry to the US, with many US-based businesses advertising in the US for decades.
According to data from research firm Nielsen, the US has seen the growth of the SM industry in recent years.
The number of ad impressions generated by American businesses increased from 6.5 per cent in 2010 to 13.2 per cent last year.
The report from the International Business Machines Corporation also found that the US spent $18.4bn on ads in 2014.
It was also the biggest spend in the Middle East, with Saudi Arabia spending $14.2bn, followed by the UAE at $11.4.
